Lisel Thomas began volunteering at The Venny in Kensington just before Christmas. Keen to do something behind the scenes, she jumped at the chance to take on one of our housekeeping roles as well as providing grant writing support. “I don’t have to be out there playing with children to contribute. I feel like what I do lets staff get on with the other work,” she says.

Lisel was drawn to The Venny through her interest in the environment and how it adds value to children’s play. An interest that saw her change career and pursue work in the early childhood sector following several decades working in State Government. “At this point in my career (working part time and volunteering) it’s like a nice transition. It’s great not being stressed and responsible for stuff!

Lisel reflects on her own childhood compared to that of her own children. “When I was little, we had these sorts of spaces to play in, including my own backyard, but my children didn’t because we didn’t have as big a backyard and the playgrounds that were available to them were more controlled. It’s fabulous that these places (adventure playgrounds) exist so that children can have the same play experiences that I had.”

Lisel enjoys being able to support The Venny from behind the scenes and learning how the organisation works, how the Venny is funded and the need for ongoing grants. “I like that I’ve been able to choose my level of involvement.” Lisel volunteers one morning a week as part of a team of Housekeepers at Kensington and undertakes grant writing on an ad hoc basis. The Housekeeping team at Kensington is working well and is something we’re seeking to establish at Cubbies.

A final word from Lisel, “I do find it a bit ironic that I pay for a cleaner to come and clean my house and volunteer my time to come and clean at The Venny!” Thanks Lisel, we love the irony and your valuable contribution.
