In the cooler months fires are introduced into our drop-in sessions and evening programs at The Venny, Cubbies and The Venny To You. More than a source of warmth, fire is a powerful tool for learning, play, and emotional development. Children are naturally drawn to it—mesmerised by the flickering flames, the warmth on their skin, and the way smoke dances in the air. Their curiosity is sparked, and with it, opportunities for growth and connection.

Around the fire, children engage in deep play—gathering kindling, learning to light flames, and even cooking simple meals like eggs or cultural breads. These activities are not only fun, but teach valuable life skills, including fire safety, risk awareness, patience, and teamwork. The fire becomes a space where creativity and confidence flourish.

We’ve seen how fire can shift children from a state of overstimulation to calm focus. At first, the excitement is intense—but over time, they learn to regulate themselves, sitting quietly, watching the flames, or tending to embers with care. They gain a sense of mastery, which builds self-esteem and resilience.

The fire also creates a unique social atmosphere. Conversations become slower and more reflective. Parents often share childhood memories of sitting around fires, creating a sense of intergenerational connection. One parent told us, “I love the fire. We all love the fire. It reminds me of family back home.”

By safely exposing children to fire, we help them develop respect, awareness, and emotional regulation—skills that last a lifetime.
